As if escaping from the busy centre wasn't indulgent enough, we had the pleasure of staying at the beautiful Hecker's Hotel during our time in western Berlin. With an excellent location on a quiet, leafy street in between the famous Kurfürstendamm shopping street and Savignyplatz, this is the ideal place for a retreat while visiting Germany's vibrant capital.
Of the property's 69 rooms, we settled into the handsomely decorated Colonial Suite, one of three styles for the large suites occupying the top floor. The room was huge, with a walk-in-closet, towel warmer, two balconies and a separate wet bar with a Nespresso machine. It could also be expanded into a two-bedroom suite by hiring the adjoining room. Each morning we enjoyed a fresh, delicious breakfast downstairs that included eggs, meats, cheeses, yogurts and that most wonderful staple, German bread in several varieties.
This is a privately run four star hotel and that means personalized attention from their friendly staff. Relaxing spaces like the roof terrace or lobby bar are available for guests to relax and have a drink and the hotel can help arrange everything from tickets to city tours. Package deals are also available to combine a stay with activities like golfing, sightseeing or cooking classes.
For us, one of the best features of the hotel was the location. Charlottenburg has a number of attractions that are sometimes overlooked by visitors to the city as well as top restaurants, art galleries, nightlife and entertainment options. For ideas, see our list of things to do in west Berlin. The hotel is located only four stops from the main train station (Hauptbahnhof), which provides easy access to Berlin's main sights. I know I'll need to visit again just for shopping along the Kurfürstendamm.
