Some of the Most Unexpected Beach Vacations

While Hawaii, the Caribbean and Australia are obvious spots to lounge on the sand, not every beach vacation is common. There are many coastlines around the world that aren’t pictured as tropical vacation destinations, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t.

These five spots offer luxury beach holidays that can’t be beat. Skip the trip to tourist-filled Maui and take a unique vacation in the sunshine instead.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

While the name Zanzibar is relatively well known, the place it represents isn’t always at the forefront of vacation itineraries. But that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be. Zanzibar is an archipelago off the coast of Africa featuring two main islands—Unguja and Pemba—plus many smaller ones.

Enjoy seaside bliss while at the islands of Zanzibar. Whether you’re dining at restaurants directly on the sand or listening to live music, the area is rich with culture. Stone Town on Unguja features narrow stone streets, meaning bicycles and scooters abound. But it’s a great place to buy produce and creative goods while taking in the Arabian architecture. Down by the water, sail into the sun on wooden boats, do yoga on the white sand or go snorkeling.

Sardinia, Italy

This large island off the coast of Italy offers endless coastlines comparable to other Italian getaways. While the Amalfi Coast continues to draw visitors from around the world, opt for a more unique spot and visit this incredible island. Many of the resorts offer private beaches but even the public ones have plenty to offer.

Sardinia is renowned for its natural settings—mainly the beaches, but also the volcanic Monte Urtigu. With boat tours, hidden beaches and canyon adventures featuring flowing waterfalls, water activities are everywhere. But the island has plenty other experiences as well. Go wine tasting, learn to bake bread or take a historical tour of local archeological sites.

Bodrum, Turkey

For a truly unique beach experience, visit Bodrum in Turkey. The town’s coastline is near the Aegean Sea and features two coves that offer stunning views of the local castle. Here, visit five-star resorts for a luxurious trip in an unexpected place.

Aside from Bodrum Castle, the ancient city is home to historic baths, hot springs, ancient ruins and an underwater archeology museum. This area is also ideal for ocean and river cruises, rafting trips, sea fishing, jeep tours and more. There is also a lot of wildlife living on the island and in its surrounding waters, including sea turtles, monk seals, foxes, wild boar and lizards. Windsurfing, sailing and canoeing are also popular sports on nearby beaches.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

The whole island of Tenerife is a beautiful place to vacation, but the port city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is definitely special. Many places on the island feature vibrant pools, bold blue ocean views and luxury digs.

The area is big on water sports and adventures, offering things like paragliding, snorkeling (with sea turtles!) and scuba diving. Visitors also tend to partake in jet skiing, motor boat tours, free diving, kayaking, sailing and stand-up paddleboarding. Aside from the beach and water sports, this area of Spain is home to various museums like the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes and the local museum of natural history. Don’t forget to visit the local shrines, ruins and gardens as well.

Balaclava, Mauritius

Over 1,000 miles from the African coastline, Mauritius is an island nation that no one ever really talks about. As such, it’s a great place for a quiet vacation without many other tourists around. Those that seek isolation simply have to visit this island.

Aside from exquisite five-star resorts, this area is all about relaxation. There isn’t a whole lot to do that doesn’t focus completely on the ocean. Take the opportunity to relax on the sand and maybe get a spa treatment. If you crave adventure, there are still plenty of ways to get your adrenaline pumping. Go diving or snorkeling, head out on a boat or seek out the sea turtles that roam local waters.

One of the most pivotal parts of any trip is the hotel. With Voyage Privé’s variety of beach holiday offerings, you’re sure to find the perfect resort in which to thrive. Whether it’s an adult-only space with turquoise infinity pools or an all-inclusive seaside spot, your unique beach vacation will likely be a good one.
