Signs of the Times

by Andrea on January 10, 2012

As we travelled around the world last year, we captured some funny pictures of signs and interesting graffiti:

no croatia Signs of the Times

Some very specific food restrictons on a bus in Croatia

no smoking dunedin Signs of the Times

Don’t smoke in this Dunedin hostel.

yuppies prenzlauerberg berlin Signs of the Times

The locals aren’t pleased with the gentrification happening in Prenzlauerberg, Berlin. Not sure exactly what this sign says, though…anyone?

no tourism puerto varas chile Signs of the Times

Similarly, some people aren’t fond of the tourist influx in Puerto Varas, Chile.

guns budapest Signs of the Times

Hmmm…saw this one in Budapest, Hungary.

brothel napier Signs of the Times

This was stamped on the door of a brothel in Napier. Only a very specific 37%?

hippies berlin Signs of the Times

Seen on the door of a cafe in Berlin

teenagers ireland theburren Signs of the Times

bikes amsterdam Signs of the Times

in Amsterdam, Netherlands

murder burger auckland Signs of the Times

Auckland, New Zealand

prague Signs of the Times

Good advice in Prague

XD We have a REDRUM Burger in Davis, California (in response to the Murder Burger photo).

Wow, that “No gun shooting strictly” sign is kind of interesting and annoying, because now I wonder why they had to post that (all sorts of bad questions pops into my head….).

Andrea and John January 10, 2012 at 3:49 pm

That’s exactly what I thought about the gun sign! Love the name REDRUM Burger =)

Andrew January 10, 2012 at 9:19 pm

That first sign is from Croatia? That is hilarious as the words are in German. French fries and chewing gum from left to right.
What hostel is that in Dunedin?  I saw a sign in Athens above the computers mentioning that the server manager has a high powered rifle and do not install ANYTHING on the computers.
The graffiti from Berlin says Yuppies Out on the top line and no clue on the rest, guessing the “artists” tag somehow.
Was Murder Burger any good? Was it actually meat or veggie burgers?  We LOVED Velvet Burger in Dunedin and were so happy to find one in Auckland.

Andrea and John January 11, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Hmmm – what was that hostel called in Dunedin? Can’t remember…it was in an old hospital on a hill and said to be haunted. Thanks for clearing up the translation on the Yuppies graffiti – I thought it was something like that. We actually didn’t eat at the Murder Burger. John is still sad about that one…

Marie-Eve Vallieres January 10, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Haha I remember seeing that teenager advice sign, and I found it so funny! And not actually that far from reality!

Raymond @ Man On The Lam January 10, 2012 at 4:54 pm

One would hope they did not murder the kitty for that burger…

Andrea and John January 10, 2012 at 5:25 pm

Why would they use a cat for their logo? Made me think of the poor dears at the pounds all over the world…

Sophie January 11, 2012 at 2:43 am

Since you can’t tell from the sign what it is, presumably only German-speakers can’t chew gum on that Croatias bus :)

Andrea and John January 11, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Plenty of German tourists in Croatia so maybe they did that on purpose? =)

Andi Perullo January 10, 2012 at 11:09 pm

I am laughing so hard right now I can barely type!

Debbie @ European Travelista January 11, 2012 at 5:55 am

Love signs that get lost in translation!  I’ll make sure to never drink alone :)

Andrea and John January 11, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Loved that, haha – rather than the usual ‘drink responsibly’

Nomadic Samuel January 11, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Those are great.  I love the hippies always welcome :)

Sherry January 11, 2012 at 5:09 pm

HA! I love the teenager sign best – most clever, I think. I take tons photos of funny signs whenever I can during my travels. They’re like my souvenirs for a specific place: cheap, light, and always makes me smile. Great captures.

Christy & Scott January 11, 2012 at 10:27 am

Hahaha! I love the no smoking sign. Good of you to remember to take photos of these signs. I always forget!

Andrea and John January 11, 2012 at 2:40 pm

I loved that one too – it was extra interesting at the time as well because the hostel was said to be haunted

Cheryl January 11, 2012 at 8:00 pm

Thank you for making my day! I loved all of these photos, especially the one about teenagers. Some people are just way too clever for this world, and you guys should totally post this on 9gag.

I’ll try to scout for signs like these too when I travel. It sounds like fun to make fun of funny signs. Thanks for the idea!

Andrea and John January 11, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Cheers, Cheryl! Glad you enjoyed them =)

Dayna and Kurt January 11, 2012 at 10:01 pm

These are too funny.  I loved all of them, but I think my favorite was ‘No Gun Shooting STRICTLY.’  I mean, I’m glad they are strict about no gun shooting, at least it doesn’t say 37% No Gun Shooting.  =)

Claire January 12, 2012 at 12:09 am

Love funny signs, love the “People smoking in this house will be beheaded and vaporised…” Little extreme but definitely gets the point across and the STRICTLY NO SHOOTING one as well!

Robin January 12, 2012 at 7:00 am

I think the murder burger one might be the most disturbing…

Pippa January 12, 2012 at 7:14 am

Haha! Brilliant! ‘Yuppies Raus scene dogz 10G’ (presumably this is not their address), perhaps it shoulda been ‘Puppies Raus’ which would make it a similar message to that sign from Ireland..

Ali January 12, 2012 at 9:08 am

I love the one from the hostel in Dunedin!

Anonymous January 14, 2012 at 4:43 am

Great collection!  One of the little amusements while traveling.

Charu January 14, 2012 at 11:46 pm

I just LOVE this, and we are huge fans of signspotting too! Beheaded and vaporised, LMAO!!!

Andrea and John January 15, 2012 at 7:54 am

Thanks so much, Charu! I laughed so hard when I saw it the first time too =)

Cheryl Howard January 15, 2012 at 4:15 am

Ha ha, love this post! I like things that make me LOL. :)

Andrea and John January 15, 2012 at 7:55 am

Me too, Cheryl – thanks! =)

Technosyncratic January 16, 2012 at 6:27 pm

Sheesh, beheaded is a harsh sentence! I like the sign that says “hippies are welcome” – for some reason the whole “no hippies” things became really popular, which I think is obnoxious.

Andrea and John January 16, 2012 at 10:40 pm

The beheaded thing was quite funny, I think, because the hostel was supposed to be haunted – could explain the harshness =)

emilyinchile January 17, 2012 at 2:15 am

Good to know relaxed gun shooting is ok :)

Our Oyster January 19, 2012 at 6:20 pm

mmmmm I miss murder burger! yum!

Andrea and John January 20, 2012 at 8:56 am

We didn’t actually get to eat there – sounds like we missed out!

Sabrina January 26, 2012 at 6:15 am

These are too funny :) I wonder if that bus in Croatia (first pic) was a German bus since the words are in German or if there are just that many German tourists in Croatia who put their gums everywhere and leave trails of French fries behind them :)

Andrea and John January 26, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Haha, SO many German tourists in Croatia…
